Valid points. There's so much we can only guess or speculate about as we never knew the man. What makes Poe so lovable is how true he was to his work. He had a style, yes. Dark, morbid, and vivid. A mind that was underappreciated. He was a talent that didn't come into the spotlight until much after his time. But got to admire him. As you said, lived his dream.
